A Taxidermist Rut Report
As a local taxidermist in Chester County, PA, we can gauge how the hunting season is progressing by the number of deer brought in throughout each stage of the season. So far, this early season in Southeastern PA has been slower than usual. We’ve only received one early-season buck, whereas we typically see a handful by October. However, with the rut clearly underway, five bucks came through the door this week, mostly medium-sized.
From what I observed out in the field, there’s been a lot of activity among smaller bucks, especially on colder days, with plenty of chasing going on. Larger bucks have been showing up more sparingly, typically one a day. It wasn’t until later in the week that I noticed bucks responding to calls more actively. I’m anticipating a busy week ahead as the rut ramps up, bringing more deer into range.
Looking forward to seeing what the rest of the rut season has in store, and to working on all the deer you’ll be dropping off. Good luck, everyone!
