Turkey Taxidermist Prep
Turkey season is under way and birds are hitting the ground. Here are a few tips on how to best prep your bird for a taxidermist if you want a fan mount. The better that you take care of your bird the better the mount will turn out. If you can’t bring your bird directly to the taxidermist here is what you should do. Turkey fans are a great way to show off your trophy without spending a ton of money and taking up a ton of space. They also are great mounts because they can easily be customized and personalized to your stye
· Make sure that the tail feathers don’t bend, or brake so be gentle with them.
· Grab the beard and give it a quick yank and it will come right out with no issues.
· Fold up the fan and grab it. With a knife make a cut right behind the main tail feathers.
· Try and keep any blood off the birds’ feathers.
· Then cut forward up to front of the back finishing the cut halfway up the back of the bird, that way you will have more feathers rather than not enough for your mount. Better to play it safe because you can always take away, but you can’t add feathers.
· For the spurs make a cut where the feathers start on the leg and break the cut at that joint.
· Next you can put all of them in a bag and in the freezer close the bag and drop it off at your taxidermist when you have a chance.
